Every year, while studying at the university, thousands of students begin their career in various fields. Some students already have work experience through part-time jobs during their studies and summer vacations, while the rest are just trying their hand. In both the first and second cases, when looking for a job, well-written will be an important starting point when applying for a job in an international company. However, drawing up a student's resume is somewhat different from the resume of specialists with work experience in a particular field.

The resume in English is called " Resume" or " CV"(Abbreviated from Latin Curriculum vitae- "biography"). V CV you can tell in more detail about your career goals, knowledge, skills, publications and hobbies. Special attention should be paid to students' personal qualities, to give information about the completion of courses, participation in competitions, Olympiads, seminars, conferences, projects, the availability of awards, certificates. If the student has informal work experience, this is also worth writing about.

When compiling a student's resume, the main thing is not to focus on little or no work experience. Focus on skills and achievements, that is, write not about experience, but about what you can do. It is necessary to highlight education and personal qualities, as well as additional knowledge.

Resume structure

An effective student resume in English provides information in a concise manner and includes 6 main blocks and 3 optional ones.

1. Personal Information

This block should contain:

  • student name ( First Name ),
  • surname ( Surname ),
  • residence address ( Address ),
  • Contact phone numbers ( Phone: mobile ( Cell phone )),
  • email address ( Email ).

Remember the rule of writing the full name in English: first we write the first name, then the first letter of the patronymic, and then the last name. As a rule, contact information is located in the middle of the sheet. The full name is highlighted in a larger, bold font. You can omit the middle name in English.

The block might look like this:

2. Objective

Here you need to indicate the position for which the student is applying, or the area in which he plans to develop.

There are two options for filling the block:

1) You simply indicate the position for which you are applying. All words in a job title in English are capitalized.

2) In one or two sentences, write what you would like to do for the company you are applying to and in what position. Here is a list of useful English phrases that a student can start off with:

For instance:

If you are writing a CV, and not a resume, then this section can be designated in English as Career goals... In this case, you need to determine the intended place of this position in your career. Students can describe their achievements in their future professional field. Provide reasons why you consider yourself a worthy applicant for this position.

To show how you are superior to other candidates, you can use English words and phrases that emphasize your activity and achievements:

    directed, managed, supervised

    achieved, generated, increased, initiated, established and launched;

    cut (reduced), reduced (reduced);

    created, developed, performed, produced, etc.

In the student's resume in English such clichés should be avoided how:

    dynamic, people-oriented, results-oriented, self-motivated, visionary.

3. Work Experience

Show experience in reverse chronological order. Specify Dates, Position, Title of company, City, Major Duties or Responsibilities, Special Projects, Accomplishments. Be sure to correctly translate companies and positions into English. Please note that if the employer needs a seller, then indicate that work experience that is at least indirectly related to sales.

If you have no work experience, then this block in its student's resume in English you don't include. Of course, the student cannot fully submit his candidacy due to lack of work experience. On the other hand, the employer understands this when hiring a student. So, strengthen your resume at the expense of other points: education and skills.

An example of registration:

Work Experience

(LLC) "Tradecontact", Tver, Russia

Responsibilities: answer calls; negotiations arrangement; office work; business documentary; advertising.

Work Experience

20013 - present Sales Manager

ABC Company, Moscow

Responsibilities: Recommended computerized bookkeeping and supervised all data entry, improved sales projections, advertising and budget planning.

Accomplishments: Organized special holiday sales promotion, which increased sales by 15%.

4. Education

This part of the student's resume is one of the most important. It is better to arrange the information in this order: Dates (study period), Major (specialty), Department (faculty), Degree (title / academic degree), Title of educational institution(name of educational institution), City (city), Country (country). The most important thing is to choose the right English version of the name of the specialization. Here you can mention additional education (trainings, courses). Indicate in English the name of the courses, the name of the organization, the city and the country. Years of study at a university or course (or year of graduation) can be indicated at the beginning or at the end.

Example of student education:

Additional education can be carried out in a separate block:

6. Publications

This block is also optional for students to fill out. Publications in newspapers or magazines, if any, are indicated here in English. The following points are important: Title (topic of publication) and Type (Note, Article, etc.) (type (note, article, etc.), Publisher (in which magazine or newspaper it was published), Date (date).

7. Skills

This block is also called Special (professional) or Additional Skills (special skills). This is an important point in student's resume in English.

Here is the following:

  • fluency in foreign languages (level of proficiency in foreign languages),
  • knowledge of a particular computer applications(level of PC proficiency, knowledge of programs),
  • driving license.

If desired, the "Languages" section can be selected in a separate block, as in the example.

  • native - native language;
  • fluent - fluent;
  • working knowledge - you can read and speak, but not fluently;
  • basic knowledge - you read with a dictionary.

Sometimes a valid option is fluent English or an expert (fluent English / expert). If you are writing your resume in English, then your level of English proficiency cannot be low.

For example:

Experience of computing:

Internet, Power Point, Internet, Outlook Express

Languages:

Russian - native
English - expert

Computer skills:

MS Office (Word, Excel), Internet, Outlook Express, 1C, Photoshop

Russian - native

English - working knowledge

French - basic knowledge

Driving License:

In addition to knowledge of English and other languages, the student can indicate other useful skills that he owns, depending on the desired position: knowledge of programming languages; budgeting skills; business communication and business correspondence skills; skills in working with office equipment, etc.

8. Interests / Activities

Students can fill out this resume block at will. Here you can list your hobbies in English. Indicate only the most important thing, this is not the information that interests the employer in the first place. However, if your hobby is learning languages other than English, it's worth writing about it!

Interests / Activities:

Member of Moscow High School Tennis Team

Learning languages: Esperanto, Japanese

Interests / Activities: Chess, volleyball, traveling, reading

There is such a way to fill in this block:

1) Full name, position of a person who can give you good recommendations, the name of the organization, its location, address, contact phone number, email address:

Resume sections such as Honors, Publications, Personal Information, References fill in at will, if students have the appropriate data.

How to strengthen a student's resume in English

In order to draw attention to the resume, students need to not only fill it competently and informatively, but also try to comply with the following recommendations:

- The length of your resume should not exceed 1 page.

- You can place your photo in the upper corner of your resume.

- For students with little work experience, it is better to place information about education right after the Objective section, and then disclose work experience.

- A resume in English should be easy to read, clearly structured. Highlight the section, company and job titles in bold.

- Do not underline words or use italics.

- Use standard fonts (Times Roman, Arial, Tahoma, Garamond).

- Include in your resume only information that is relevant to the position in question.

- And, of course, the English language in which your resume is written must be flawless.

And most importantly: in order for a student's resume to arouse the interest of a potential employer, take it with full responsibility. Don't forget that a well-written resume in English is the first impression of you. Make it as strong as possible!

How to profitably present yourself on a resume

Let's analyze this sample resume.
The resume is technically well-written, it contains enough information about education and work
young specialist Sergei Kondrashov, his goal is clearly expressed. However, it is not entirely complete for hiring an advertising agency visualizer in terms of disclosure. creativity applicant. He needed to give examples of his real work or give a link to a portfolio. How profitable to present yourself in a resume For the position of an art director, in addition to creative abilities, you also need organizational skills and experience of joint work on a project in a group, about which not a word is said in the resume.
Due to his little work experience, it is better for Sergey to give a functional character to his resume, rather than chronological, namely: to expand items 3 and 5, adding information about real projects and his abilities.

Common resume mistakes

Often the sample resume in English contains a number of errors.

  1. So, for the sake of getting a vacancy, people often try to compensate for the lack of experience by listing unnecessary details, use many incomprehensible terms and abbreviations in the document.
For example, age and marital status, if you paid attention, in the English resume are not mandatory items
  2. Technical errors:
    • confuse the sequence of listing personal data (it must be the same as indicated in the example: name, surname, street, city, country, phone, e-mail, etc. contact information)
    • the chronology of work experience should be kept starting from the last place of work, and not vice versa

Another common mistake is exaggerating the degree of language proficiency, when instead of an elementary or below average level, the resume indicates fluent- Fluency.
Remember: this little trick will still open up when you apply for a job. Even if you have mostly mastered grammar and easily translate English texts with the help of an online translator, but at the same time it is difficult to catch the spoken language, then this cannot be called fluency. Better to honestly point out - possession with a dictionary Basic English(basic English) or Basic knowledge of Business English(basic business English).

Be sure to use business reference books and dictionaries to write a technically competent resume in English.

Fun minute:

We will not claim that knowledge of English will raise your salary. But the site's statistics on this score is as follows: in Russia, the average salary in vacancies where the requirements include knowledge of the language is 30-40% higher than the average salary in vacancies without this requirement.

Of course, compulsory English is more common in job vacancies of a certain level - for executives or in international companies. But HR managers advise to have a resume in two languages, even if you are not looking for a job abroad: often English acts as a filter by which candidates are identified who have good prospects growth in the company.

Therefore, it does not hurt to tighten your tongue before making a leap up the career ladder. Start simple - a resume. Maria Mikhailova, a methodologist and teacher at the Alibra School *, helped to figure out how to translate it into English correctly.

You can create a resume without mistakes at a free master class in Moscow, which is arranged by Alibra. They will also talk about the specifics of business communication in employment - this lesson will help those who are serious about their career.

Profile: "About me"

It is better to start English resumes with a section that in English can be called a "profile". In fact, this is a squeeze from your entire resume of three to four sentences.

Here you need to say who you are and why you are applying for this vacancy. For example, “A lawyer with 5 years of experience with the Russian, US and UK copyright”. Briefly explain why you were attracted to the job and accompany it with a listing of your core skills.

What words will help here? Everything related to your professionalism, knowledge, experience and intentions. Experienced, dedicated, qualified, proficient, enhanced, striving for, eager to, focused on. This short section has one goal - to "sell" the resume to the HR department employee so that the study of the CV arouses maximum interest in him.

Work Experience and Achievements - work experience and achievements

In no case should this section be translated from Russian into English verbatim. Direct translation of constructions like "my job was ..." or "I was solving problems ..." will turn a resume into a poorly written essay for a sixth grader.

Your task is to retell the main theses contained in the Russian text in organic English. To do this, it is best to use simple sentence constructs and action words - words that indicate the actions you performed.

For example, instead of “I had to make interviews with large amount of people” write simply “Interviewed people”. Instead of “My responsibility involved planning and making decisions in ...” write “Planned and made decisions in ...”.

Here are some words to help describe your experience: advised, created, managed, researched, arranged, promoted, distributed, trained, supervised.

You can demonstrate a high level of English using professional terminology. Include one or the other specific term in your resume, but before that, carefully check if it turned out to be a tracing paper from Russian, which has a different meaning in English or is completely meaningless. A rough example: using a staff manager, or worse, a personal manager instead of an HR manager.

Also, try to avoid clichés - phrases like "achievement of personal and organization goals" and "opportunity to grow" are exactly what the recruiter sees ten times a day.

Skills - skills

Essential skills relevant to your job should be clear to the employer from experience. Additional skills usually indicate knowledge of professional programs, driving skills, and the level of proficiency in foreign languages. By the way, it is not necessary to confirm it by Cambridge or other international exams. For most employers, a certificate of completion of the courses is quite enough: for example, in the Alibra certificate there is a mark on the level of proficiency in vocabulary and grammar a student left school.

More abstract skills, such as team spirit or advanced communication skills, should only be listed if you have something to support them. For example, communication skills can coexist with frequent participation in industrial exhibitions, and leadership can be reinforced by active participation in sports competitions for a varsity team.

Words that may come in handy here: meeting deadlines, working independently, data handling, analytical and problem-solving skills, communication (written and oral).

Hobby - hobby

Some employers pay attention to what a person does in his free time, and thus assess the degree of his socialization, character traits or other qualities.

We understand that not everyone can boast that they are busy with something impressive at their leisure. But this is not required of you. Just list any socially approved occupation if you have anything to do with it. We played basketball at the institute - excellent. Traveling from time to time - great! Love Charles Dickens's books - almost perfect!

Unlike in Russia, in Europe and the United States, it is customary to indicate the contacts of past employers directly in the resume so that the recruiter has the opportunity to contact them even before the invitation for an interview.

If your resume turned out to be more than one or two A4 sheets without taking into account the "profile" and the cover letter, then you definitely wrote too much. Simplify the text and remove insignificant details to the last. Leaving only the essentials on your resume will focus the recruiter's attention on your greatest strengths.

Do not rush to send your resume right away: force yourself to wait at least a day to check it again with a fresh mind.

Better yet, submit your resume to an English teacher for review. If you live in Moscow, sign up for a free resume writing workshop in English at Alibra School to learn how to write the perfect resume to use when looking for a job.

Sign up for a master class!
